The University of California Berkeley Welcomes You To THE ZOO Please Do Not Feed The Animals DSC4086 square
University of California at Berkeley has produced some of the most talented graduates in the world and has won countless prestigious academic awards including the most nobel prizes in the universe, and are among the top institutions worldwide. That's what UCB is known for internationally. But for the Bay Area locals and for those alumni who's had the privilege and honor of graduating from this prestigous institution, we all know Cal is affectionately known only as THE ZOO! For the uninitiated, Berkeley is the epicenter of the sixties love peace and rock and roll movements, we protest just because it's Friday or any other day for that matter, and we invented equal rights, civil rights, animal rights, the right to be right, free speech, tree sitting, the green movement, alternative energy, and the black panther. And all this happens daily on our little corner of the world known simply and humbly as Sproul Plaza, the most popular part of the Zoo where you can pick up The Daily Californian, see street performer regulars, watch people from all walks of life, and carry on endless debates with perfect strangers. And if you're lucky, you might even participate in a protest or two. But remember, when you're at The Zoo, Don't Feed The Animals! -W
Sproul Plaza is a major center of student activity at the University of California, Berkeley. It is divided into two sections: Upper Sproul and Lower Sproul. They are separated by 12 vertical feet and a set of stairs. Sproul Plaza as well as Sproul Hall are named for former University of California president Robert Gordon Sproul. The Plaza was designed by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin in 1962. At the time, the University was expanding its core campus southward from its prior border at Strawberry Creek to Bancroft Avenue, and acquired acres of commercial and residential properties in the south campus Telegraph Avenue area. wikipedia
Sather Tower is a campanile (bell and clock tower) on the University of California, Berkeley campus. It is more commonly known as The Campanile due to its resemblance to the Campanile di San Marco in Venice, and serves as UC Berkeley's most recognizable symbol. It was completed in 1914 and first opened to the public in 1917. The tower stands 307 feet (93.6 m) tall, making it the third tallest bell and clock-tower in the world. It was designed by John Galen Howard, founder of the Department of Architecture at the University, and it marks a secondary axis in his original Beaux-Arts campus plan. Since then, it has been a major point of orientation in almost every campus master plan. The tower has seven floors, with an observation deck on the eighth floor. -wikipedia
