Description
The Weeping Maidens of The San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts - 5D18390
The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco was constructed for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition which opened on February 20, 1915. San Francisco was honoring the discovery of the Pacific Ocean and the completion of the Panama Canal as well as celebrating its own resurrection after the great earthquake and fire of 1906.
The statues at the top of the columns depict weeping maidens longing for their dead soldiers lost in the Panama Canal Zone war.
